Job Description — Lifting Supervisor

Project: Mozambique LNG
Location: Afungi, Cabo Delgado, Mozambique
Reports to: Lifting Superintendent / Operations Manager
Rotation: 75 days on / 21 days off

Role Purpose

Supervise lifting operations to ensure they are executed safely and in accordance with approved lifting plans, method statements and project requirements. Coordinate crane operators, riggers and banksmen/signallers during construction, vessel discharge and cargo-handling activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise lifting operations in accordance with approved lifting plans, risk assessments and method statements.
  • Conduct pre-lift briefings and toolbox talks in Portuguese and English, confirming individual responsibilities, communication methods and emergency arrangements.
  • Verify that required permits and authorisations are in place before lifting starts.
  • Confirm load weight, centre of gravity, lifting points, crane configuration and operating radius against the approved lifting plan.
  • Verify crane positioning, ground conditions and outrigger arrangements, escalating any concerns to the responsible lifting authority.
  • Check that cranes and lifting accessories have valid inspection records, appropriate identification and sufficient rated capacity for the planned lift.
  • Ensure pre-use checks are completed and defective equipment is removed from service.
  • Confirm that crane operators, riggers and banksmen/signallers are competent and authorised for their duties.
  • Establish exclusion zones, safe access routes and suitable load landing areas.
  • Maintain effective communication between lifting personnel, vessel representatives and construction or logistics teams.
  • Monitor weather, visibility and surrounding activities throughout lifting operations.
  • Stop operations whenever conditions are unsafe or deviate from the approved plan; obtain review and authorisation before resuming.
  • Ensure changes to lifting arrangements are referred to the Appointed Person or responsible lifting authority.
  • Report incidents, near misses and equipment defects, and support investigations and corrective actions.
  • Maintain lifting records, inspection checklists and shift handovers.

Essential Requirements

  • Fluent in both Portuguese and English, spoken and written, with the ability to communicate clearly with multinational site teams.
  • Previous experience as a Lifting Supervisor on construction sites, including direct supervision of crane operations and lifting crews.
  • Recognised lifting supervisor qualification or certification acceptable to the project.
  • Practical knowledge of crane operations, rigging methods, lifting accessories, load control and signalling.
  • Ability to interpret lifting plans, crane load charts, risk assessments and method statements.
  • Experience verifying equipment certification and personnel competency records.
  • Strong leadership and the ability to challenge unsafe practices and exercise stop-work authority.
  • Good organisation, reporting and basic computer skills.
  • Willingness to work on site in Afungi on a 75-day on / 21-day off rotation, including day or night shifts as scheduled.

Desirable Requirements

  • Previous oil and gas or LNG project experience is an advantage.
  • Experience with vessel loading/discharge, port operations and project cargo.
  • Experience supervising heavy, oversized or complex lifts.
  • Additional qualifications in rigging, banksman/signaller duties or lifting equipment inspection.
  • Experience working on large projects involving multiple contractors.
  • First aid or emergency response training.
